Update letter on Henoko sent to civil society organizations and elected officials
It has been two years since over 100 civil society organizations and over 30 locally elected U.S. officials joined our Letter of Request and sent it to members of the Armed Forces Committees of the U.S. Congress. The letter urged the Congress members to stop the Henoko base construction and close the dangerous U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
Today, we sent our Letter of Update on the Henoko base construction to those organizations and elected officials (see below). Our update letter explains how the Japanese government and the Japanese Court have pushed forward the Henoko project. It discusses that the U.S. military and U.S. Congress members have expressed serious concerns regarding the Henoko project due to, among other things, the extremely soft seafloor at the construction site.
Our update letter also introduces a letter sent in June this year by U.S. Congressman James C. Moylan to the U.S. Government Accountability Office to produce a detailed report on the Henoko base construction. This is a critical development upon which we can build our fight.
We hope many people will read and share our update letter and join our fight to stop the Henoko project and close the dangerous Futenma Air Station.
